A workshop is a forum for building knowledge about a topic. The organizer provides a timetable of activities to help all participants explore the topic and create their own knowledge. This generally involves working in groups (or everyone together), and the organizer often takes the role of facilitator to help the groups work effectively. Each group is normally expected to produce a flipchart poster and present back to the other groups what they have learned or concluded about the topic.
Workshops are a good way to build up your knowledge of cutting edge, poorly defined or complicated topics because they combine the knowledge and cognitive abilities of multiple people to solve difficult problems. Familiarity with the topic is required but expert knowledge usually is not, so unlike a tutorial, the organizer need not be more knowledgeable and experienced than the other participants.
